<image:title>About - Premier Dance Education in Historical Chehalis, Washington</image:title>
<image:caption>Southwest Washington Dance Center is an incorporated non-profit organization dedicated to professional quality instruction, appreciation and presentation of dance as an art form throughout Lewis County and greater Southwest Washington. SWDC gives service without regard to race, religion, color, sex or ethnic origin and is managed by a volunteer board of directors. SWDC was founded in 1982. As an incorporated 501 (C) 3, SWDC was originally established as the Chehalis Ballet Center. Founded by former professional dancer, Dean Speer of Seattle – the center was established on professional principles and community values. Dean Speer and the original SWDC staff donated their services to get the school up and running. Passion for bringing the art of dance to Lewis County has been and continues to be a cornerstone of SWDC. In 1995, Hugh Bigney the Director at that time and the Board of Directors changed the name of the school to Southwest Washington Dance Center to better reflect the diverse geographical area the Dance Center Served. Southwest Washington Dance Ensemble provides opportunities for growth beyond dance education. Our staff and instructors are dedicated to developing premiere technique, and confidence that will last well beyond the dance studio.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a non-profit dance center, we survive on our community support and donations. Throughout the year, we have various opportunities to help give back and contribute to our dancers. During our performance seasons, local businesses and families are welcome to become our event sponsors. Additional donations can be made to sponsor company costumes and props. We have donation funded scholarships that are given out each year as tuition support for those dancers who cannot afford classes. Donations can be made to help with the renovation and maintenance of our building. Donations of any amount are always accepted. One special building donation opportunity is displayed in our brick studio. Your $100 donation will ensure your name or inspirational quote is placed on our brick studio wall.</image:caption>

Concepts and movement skills together lay a foundation for academic learning. Creative Movement is an exploration of dance, body movement, music and more. In addition to opening new worlds of creativity and self-expression, creative dance has the power to enhance intellectual, social, emotional and physical learning. Parent/Toddler classes are for ages 2-3. A parent or guardian stays in class with the child. Our Creative Movement classes are grouped by age, with children ages 4-6.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our New Building SWDC has been a staple business in downtown Chehalis for many years. In 2016, it was time to retire our "renter" status and launch our official campaign to purchase our own building. The purchase of a building just a few doors down, was made possible by the community support and fundraising efforts of our SWDC family. We now have 4 dedicated studios to provide professional-quality dance education from students ages 2-60+. Our 18,000 square-foot building has dedicated study rooms, locker rooms, costume storage and a lounge space for our dancers.</image:caption>

      <image:title>DANCE FESTIVAL NORTHWEST 2026</image:title>
<image:caption>School Tour Production SPRING 2026 At SWDC, we believe in bringing dance to the community. Each year, dancers participate in our "School Tour Production." We are excited to bring back our production this year for a performance featuring songs from The Wizard of Oz! We will be performing at area elementary schools in May and June. This mini-production features various styles of dance and often tells a familiar story such as Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, etc. The production is performed at local schools in Lewis County. The school tours production happens every year, May - June depending on our local schools availability.
